From dawn until dusk, Waikiki Beach is the best place to learn to surf in the entire world. That being said, nothing compares to the experience of learning to ride its waves around golden hour. Aside from the view, there are a number of advantages to booking a sunset surf lesson in Waikiki. These include the following:

  • Less crowded: There is no shortage of surfers in the lineup in the late afternoon and early evening, but there are far fewer swimmers, snorkelers, and floaties in the water at sunset. A smaller crowd creates a more enjoyable experience for less-experienced / beginner surfers.
  • Beginner friendly conditions: While it varies by seasonal swell, conditions are often appealing for beginners around sunset. Winds usually die down, which creates an ideal window for beginners. The waves of inside Queens or Canoes (where lessons take place) generally become smooth and roll in beautifully as the sun prepares to set.
  • Photo opportunities: Visitors who request a sunset surf lesson in Waikiki often have one thing at the top of mind – photos! In addition to lessons, our surf school offers students the opportunity to add surfing photography to their package. Our photographer will join you and your instructor in the water to capture your first rides on the North Pacific with a Hawaiian sunset serving as an idyllic backdrop.

What Time Are Sunset Surf Lessons?

Autumn/Winter Season Lesson Time: 4:45 PM

In winter, sunset at Waikīkī Beach occurs somewhere around 5:50 PM and 6:20 PM Hawaii Standard Time (HST). Between November and December, the earliest sunset of the period occurs around 5:50 PM. In January, the sun sets slightly later, averaging around 6:00 PM to 6:20 PM by the end of the month. In February, days begin to lengthen, with the sun setting somewhere between 6:25 PM and 6:35 PM. In general, one-hour sunset surf lessons during the autumn/winter season are booked at about 4:45 PM. We will determine the exact time for you and/or your group when we talk on the phone. Give us a call at 808-724-4208! It’s better to call over using our booking form when it comes to sunset lessons, given how variable the times are during certain seasons.

Spring/Summer Season Lesson Time: 5:30 PM

In Waikiki, sunset occurs between 6:40 PM and 7:15 PM during the spring and summer. In general, sunset surf lessons during the this time of the year are booked at about 5:30 PM. We will determine the exact time for you and/or your group when we talk on the phone. Give us a call at 808-724-4208! Again, it’s better to call over using our booking form when it comes to sunset lessons, given how variable the times are during certain seasons.

Book 24-Hours in Advance (or earlier)

Most Waikiki Beach surf schools don’t accept bookings for sunset surf lessons. But because our HQ is actually located in the heart of Waikiki Beach (view proximity to your hotel) we can accommodate your request for a golden hour experience. All that we ask for is 24-hour advance bookings (although the earlier you book, the better) to ensure that we have the required number of instructors available to meet your needs.
